The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (“the Act”) came into force on January 1, 2001.  It immediately applied to all “federal works, undertakings and businesses”.

The purpose of the Act is to recognize the privacy rights of individuals with respect to their personal information and the need of organizations to collect, use or disclose personal information for reasonable purposes.
