course information

The Canadian Certified Insurance Broker (CCIB) designation is the highest awarded by the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC), denoting a professional standard of excellence towards which all insurance brokers may strive.

The CCIB program challenges the candidate’s practical knowledge of property and casualty insurance coverage available in the marketplace. There is no formal course of study to prepare for the examinations. Practical, hands-on experience is the best preparation tool. A resource study manual is available to assist the candidates. The candidate must have a comprehensive understanding of the statutory conditions, insurance agreements, policy conditions and legal concepts.

The CCIB program consists of three examinations:

  • Part 1 – Essay Questionnaire
    • 3.5 hour exam
    • Case study style questions
    • Tests the application of technical knowledge and risk management
    • Passing mark – 60%
    • Exam dates are offered in May and December.

  • Part 2 – Short Answer Questionnaire
    • 2 hour exam
    • Short answer questions
    • Tests technical insurance knowledge
    • Passing mark – 60%
    • Exam dates are offered in May and December.

  • Part 3 – Final Examination
The two written questionnaires are a prerequisite to the final exam.  There are two options for writing the final exam:

Option 1 – Oral Examination
• 1.5 hour examination
• 3 panelists test the candidate based on the insurance proposal they have prepared from a client’s perspective
• Passing mark – 60%
• Exam dates are arranged at a mutually agreeable time between the student and IBAS.
OR
Option 2 – Survey Examination
• 5 hour examination
• Open book examination in which the candidate may use manuals or forms they consider appropriate for this exam (may be subject to restrictions)
• Passing mark – 60%
• Exam dates are offered twice a year on the same dates as the CAIB examinations in May and December.

The CCIB sets a standard of quality to merit public recognition throughout Canada and to ensure that the independent broker will continue to flourish. Graduates are awarded the CCIB designation and receive a certificate and lapel pin at the annual IBAS Convention.

Qualifications
Candidates for the CCIB designation must be employed as a property and casualty insurance broker by a general insurance brokerage that is a member in good standing of a member association which is and continues to be a member of IBAC.  The right to use and maintain the CCIB designation shall only continue if membership status is maintained.  The candidate must have a minimum of five consecutive years experience in the insurance industry.

Upon successful completion of three required examinations, the candidate agrees, as a condition of the designation:
